Use A Tire Gauge For Longer Lasting Tires

With the recent increases in the prices of oil, the price of tires have also increased. Tires at one time could be easily picked up for under fifty dollars each have doubled in price. If you want to preserve the life of your tires, a tire gauge is an invaluable tool. While relatively inexpensive, it allows you to ensure that your tires are properly inflated at all times.

While you can find tire gauges with dial style readouts, one of the easiest to use and most accurate styles of tire gauges is the pen style. These tire gauges are about twice the size of the barrel of a ball point pen. On one end of the tire gauge is a ball shaped head that contains the rubber interface that is used on the tire. On the other end is the metal or plastic stick that is driven out by the air pressure and remains out for the user to read.

On your tire’s sidewall there should be printed a maximum inflation value for those particular tires. In your vehicles owner’s manual and on the door post of your vehicle, you will find printed the recommended inflation pressures for your vehicle.

All tires should be inflated to approximately the same pressure. Keep the tires on your vehicle inflated to those values but below the maximum pressure recommended for the tires and you will get the maximum tire life.

If you are interested in extending tire life, you should check the pressure in your tires at least once per week. If you notice that pressure in one particular tire is low regularly, you may have a slow leak that needs to be repaired at a tire shop. Repair of that leak will keep the tire properly inflated and prevent excess wear of the tire.
